Lake Travis – Austin, TX
The ATX Bassmasters fished a very cold Lake Travis on January
20th. The air temp was in the mid 20s as 21 competitors
took to the water. Anglers had to deal with ice in their
rod guides and a lack of feeling in their fingers. The weather
warmed as the fog and cloud cover diminished, but not much.
The bite as a whole was tough as only three limits came
to the scale.
Ed Matthews fished a brown jig to put together a winning
limit weighing 13.69 pounds. Ed caught most of his fish
in 5 to 15 feet of water near deep breaks. He picked up
one other weigher on a drop shot on similar structure. With
a 3.53 pound bass that missed "big bass" by .01
pounds, Matthews had a sack of solid keepers. The bite was
very light and Seaguar flourocarbon helped detect the most
subtle fish pressure and movement.
Dan Taylor came in a close second, weighing a limit going
11.01 pounds. Dan also got jiggy with it, picking up all
of his limit on a jig. He also reported using Seaguar Invizx
to help feel the light bites.
Henry Meyer came in third place. Henry's limit weighed
in at 8.85 pounds. We don't have info on Henry's pattern,
but there is a good chance it either involved tubes or crank
baits.
Michael Waldrop took fourth place with a four bass 8.27
pound bag. Michael reported catching his fish with a Texas
rigged brush hog. Michael also took big bass honors with
a monster weighing in at 3.54 pounds!
Mark Peevey came in third place with a four fish bag tipping
the scales at 7.85 pounds. Mark caught three blacks on a
Bandit Chartreuse Shad crankbait. His spottie was caught
on a watermelon Oldham's jig. Mark caught all of his fish
on Daiwa rods and reels. His Fish Hedz really came in handy
today due to the extreme cold weather.
Jack Waldrop Jr. rounded out the top 6 with a four fish
bag weighing 5.58 pounds. Jack caught some of his fish on
a rattle trap and finessed the others with a drop shot.
ATX Bassmasters next tournament is on Canyon Lake on Saturday
2/16. The club meets the first Tuesday of each month at
Threadgils restaurant downtown on Riverside.
