Buchanan – Buchanan, TX
The ATX Bassmasters chose Buchanan for the site of the year's final tournament. Much of the club was concerned over the poor showings from recent tournaments on the lake. Little did we know that that was about to change on the second day of December. The weather was inviting with warm temps and light winds at the start. The temperature stayed mild, but the north winds picked up, a lot, as the day wore on.
Dan Taylor found the right combination for Buchanan's big bass. Dan was tossing a green pumpkin 3/8 oz jig with a watermelon trailer targeting docks with brush on them in 2 to 8 feet of water. He fished from down by the dam all the way up to Tow catching quite a few keepers along the way and culling three times. When it was all said and done, Dan's limit weighed in at a whopping 19.98 pounds, including the tournaments' 6.39 pound big bass!
Michael Waldrop had a very respectable second place bag weighing in at 14.58 pounds. Michael reported catching his fish on a chartreuse and white War Eagle spinnerbait. If you get a chance, you should stop in at the Waldrop's Bee Cave BBQ at the corner of Bee Caves and River Hills. The fishing stories are second only to their barbecue!
Fishing from his trusty Skeeter iClass, Pete Albarado, put together a 12.47 pound limit to take third place. Pete reported catching most of his keepers on a War Eagle spinnerbait fished around shallow brush in the backs of coves. He also picked up one keeper on a frog.
Adam Clark weighed in an 11.93 pound bag to take fourth place. Unfortunately for Adam, his bag only had four keepers in it, but they were all 3 pounders! Adam reported catching his fish up the river on crankbaits and jigs.
President Gary Brownel took fifth place honors. Gary caught a limit weighing 10.15 pounds with the first fish falling to a crankbait. The rest of his limit was caught on a green pumpkin speed craw. If you are in the market for insurance, give Gary a call at Preferred Personal Insurance Agency at (512)258-2000 ext. 205.
O'Dell Woolley rounded out the Top 6 with a limit weighing 8.47 pounds. O'Dell caught his keepers on, get this, a tube. Not just any tube mind you, a Bass Pro tube, fished around the rocks with an open hook. He reported losing only 22 set-ups during the day!
Ed Matthews and Mark Peevey were tied in AOY points coming in to the Buchanan tournament. Neither had a great day, but Ed managed to catch enough to pull ahead of Mark and win his second ATX Angler of the Year title!
The ATX Bassmasters are looking forward to 2008. If you are interested in joining a BASS Federation Nation affiliated club, please join us at Threadgil's restaurant on Riverside downtown. The next meeting is scheduled for January 8 due to New Years falling on a Tuesday and our first tournament of the year will be on Lake Travis on 1/20. We look forward to seeing you there!
