Waldrops Whoop Up On Travis

September 1, 2007
Travis – Austin, TX

The ATX Bassmasters took to local Lake Travis on August 26th. The moon was full and the sky clear which had the fish on a heavy evening feed. The day started out warm and just kept getting warmer. The wind was almost non-existent, but the recreational boat wakes made up for it!  Fishing seemed tough for most ATX members, but Jack Waldrop Jr. and Michael Waldrop found the fish to be cooperative. Jack reported catching several limits of bass fishing ledges in 15 to 20 feet of water. His heaviest five weighed in at 12.22 pounds for first place. Jack caught most of his keepers on texas-rigged green craw worms and reported catching a few keepers on a DD-22. Jack and Michael both work at Bee Cave BBQ, at the corner of Bee Caves Rd. and River Hills Rd. just west of Hwy 360. The entire Waldrop family is involved in the operation. They serve some of the best BBQ you can find. Give it a try, it is well worth the trip, plus you can talk fishing!

Michael Waldrop, fishing with his brother Jack, finished second with a limit weighing 12.04 pounds. Michael caught his fish on the same ledges, but fished different baits. He reported catching most of his fish on a spinner bait letting the bait flutter off the edges of the ledge. Jack and Michael reportedly tore them up even better the week before!

Mark Peevey continued his streak of high finishes by just barely squeaking in to third place with a limit weighing 8.07 pounds. Fishing out of his Yamaha powered ZX225 Skeeter, he caught quite a few early fish with a Terminator spinner bait thrown on 15# Stren High Impact line targeting brushy points on the main lake. Mark culled several times later in the day fishing a craw worm with his trusty Daiwa equipment.

Gerald Goff took 4th place with a limit weighing 8.06 pounds; Gerald reported seeing two full moons, stars and someone taking pictures of his Johnson (did I mention he runs a Mercury). You'll have to ask him for the details. Gerald caught most of his fish on a drop shot fished around main lake docks in 15 to 25 feet of water. His bait of choice was a 4 inch finesse worm. Congratulations, Gerald, on picking up Omega jigs as a sponsor. He has put quite a few nice fish in the boat this year using Omega's football jig.

Kirby Lindhart, fishing with his son Matt, put together a 7.49 pound limit for fifth place. Kirby reported putting a quick limit in his Ranger, from Gary's Marine in Gatesville, using a chug bug on brushy points. Kirby upgraded a couple of times later in the day drop shotting a smoke purple flake worm around docks at a depth of 20 feet.

Juan Lopez rounded out the top six with a limit weighing 6.38 pounds. Juan's bite really turned on after 10 AM. He caught his limit fish on main lake points using Tex rigged brush hogs and a nice 3 pounder cranking a DT 16 over a beach in 14' -18'. Juan is associated with Lureexchange.com. Check them out if you enjoy collecting lures or are trying to find that magic bait that is out of production.

Aaron Campbell caught the big bass of the tournament, 5.75 pounds, but unfortunately his fish was quite lonely and didn't have any friends in the livewell with him.

ATX is hitting Lake Austin next for a night tournament from 12am until 9am on September 15th. Let's keep it safe in the dark!
