Honor thy Mother!

May 13, 2007
Lake Travis – Austin, TX

The ATX BASSMASTERS elected to honor Mother’s Day in true BASSMASTER fashion by fishing a tournament on beautiful Lake Travis.  Our anglers faced some pretty tough conditions brought about by bright sun, calm winds and heavy recreational traffic common to holiday weekends on this popular lake.

At the end of the day it was a guest and potential future ATX Member, Curtis Edwards that weighed the heaviest bag of the day.  Curtis’ five fish limit came to the scales at just over nine pounds.  It was a spinnerbait that before the sun topped the canyon walls tricked his big fish into biting.  He then filled out his limit with a shaky-head watermelon finesse worm.  Congratulations Curtis and we look forward to seeing you at the June 5th club meeting.

Ubi Figueiredo continues his excellent string of finishes this year by taking the second place spot and claiming top honors among the active membership.  Ubi netted a limit weighing 8.58 pounds by working a watermelon red Zoom Super Fluke around flooded brush early then he moved out to the bluff walls where he switched to a watermelon red finesse worm rigged on a shaky-head jig.  If Ubi continues at his current pace he just might be the clubs first repeat AOY.

Yours truly Gerald Goff managed to take third with a bag totaling 8.28 pounds.  I picked up a limit of fish early on a shad color Roboworm rigged on a dropshot fished around deep docks and ledges.  I then moved out onto deep offshore structure where I culled my early limit using a watermelon candy Omega football head jig and matching Zoom Super Speed Craw.

The very consistent Rick Angrick found his way to the fourth slot by working a white spinnerbait around submerged brush early then by working a jig and Lucky Craft Pointer on points later in the day.  His five fish limit tipped the scales 7.90 pounds.  The club will be without Rick for a few months while he makes his annual business run up North.

Chris (Backwoods) Brasher took fifth place with a 7.71 pound limit he pulled off of deep water docks using a finesse worm fished on a dropshot rig.

Rounding out the Top 6 was Skeeter Mark Peevey and his bag weighing in at 7.53 pounds.  Anchoring his sack was the Big Bass of the tournament, a 3.53 pound largemouth.  (I will let you do the math on the approximate weigh of each of his other four fish.)  Mark caught his fish on a smoke grub rigged on a jig head fishing deep ledges.

On June 16, 2007 the ATX BASSMASTERS will visit Still House Reservoir where the hydrilla should play a major role.  The question is will it be dropping a heavy jig through it, working a lipless crank or spinnerbait above it or finessing the outside edge with soft plastics that puts the winning sack in the boat?
